Fr Abbot's Homily for the Solemnity of the Assumption

Stained glass of the Assumption

Today is the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which commemorates that when Mary died, her body was "assumed" into heaven to be reunited with her soul, rather than physically decaying naturally.

Mary is seen as a ‘type’ or ‘figure’ of the Church itself – kept pure by the grace of God. Mary’s assumption is, therefore, also a ‘figure’ of the Church’s final destiny - to be raised after death to share in Christ's glory.
