Ampleforth Safeguarding Charter
At Ampleforth Abbey & College, we place an emphasis not only an academic education but one where mind, body and spirit are nurtured. For all those young people entrusted to our care, they require a safe environment in which to flourish and grow, to develop self-esteem and personal resilience.
Together with Emma Moody of Womble Bond Dickinson, a nationally renowned specialist in charity law, education and expert in safeguarding, we have jointly developed Ampleforth’s Safeguarding Charter. This Charter marks the start of a journey of continuous change where we cannot stand still. In publishing this charter, we invite a public measure of the actions we take on our commitment to being the best we can possibly be at safeguarding.
The Charter will be a live resource for the trustees, staff, pupils and volunteers at the College. The eight commitments in the Charter are:
- Keeping people safe is at the heart of everything we do.
- Our culture is one which supports a robust approach to safeguarding.
- Our safeguarding structures and processes behind them are clear, simple and transparent.
- Our systems and procedures fully support safeguarding.
- We have the right people in the right places working together to achieve effective safeguarding.
- Good safeguarding requires effective communication.
- To keep people safe, we must work in partnership with others.
- Our strategy on safeguarding embraces continuous improvement.
We must live out our Benedictine values in all aspects of our work, including how we safeguard our beneficiaries. St Benedict’s instruction to “receive all who come here as Christ” places additional responsibility on all of us.
