Admissions Journey

Enquire

If you are looking to join us in September 2024, please contact the Admissions Team to discuss your situation. For September 2025 entry, we encourage you to apply at your earliest convenience.

Open Day

An Open Day is an excellent way to see our School for the first time - the next one is Saturday 3 February. During the Open Morning you will have a tour the school with current pupils, visit a boarding house, meet the Head and key members of staff, and be invited to stay for lunch. You are most welcome to stay to watch sports matches in the valley in the afternoon and enjoy tea in the Pavilion.

We also have a Sixth Form Information Morning and Options Fair in the Autumn term for students considering joining us in September the following year.

Individual visit

We welcome and encourage families to visit Ampleforth in person, often on multiple occasions. You will meet the Registrar and any particular members of staff you would like to talk to, tour the School, and spend time with pupils, often over House Lunch.

Assessment Day

Assessments take place at Ampleforth in the January of the year of entry. Children sit papers in Mathematics, English, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. This is followed by an informal interview and an afternoon of activities from our extensive co-curricular programme.

Offer Letter

Following entry assessments, offers of a place will be made in late January. These are always subject to a good reference from the current Head. Upon acceptance of a place, a confirmation fee is payable (which is refunded at the end of your child’s time at Ampleforth).

Development Awards

Academic, Drama, Music and Sport Development Awards are available at 11+ entry. Academic and Sport Awards carry a 10% fee remission while Music and Drama Awards cover the cost of individual lessons in the pupil's chosen instrument or LAMDA.

New Starter's Day

Every June we invite pupils joining us the following September to come and meet their future classmates. This is a great opportunity for parents to meet each other too. Time is spent in House and also learning about everything from IT, ordering games kit, and choosing co-curricular activities.

Join

By the time you join Ampleforth College we hope your visits here will have helped you make new friends already and to feel comfortable around our school. Of course, it may still be daunting and we will ensure your transition is as easy and happy as possible.

A welcome pack of information, including a House Handbook and a Guide for Parents, is sent to all families as the excitement builds ahead of this new adventure.

An Ampleforth journey begins long before your child steps foot in our beautiful valley in September. Prior to joining, our Admissions Team and House Staff will be in regular contact with all the preparatory information you need to ensure a seamless introduction.

We also encourage families to follow our social media platforms to keep up-to-date with all of the latest Ampleforth news.

Assessment

For most pupils joining Ampleforth at 13+ from a UK school, entry is through assessment at Ampleforth in January of Year 6 (or Year 7), and Common Entrance which is sat in June of Year 8. Candidates not taking Common Entrance take our Ampleforth assessment in Year 6 (or Year 7 or 8).

Offer Letter

Following the Ampleforth assessment, and conditional upon Common Entrance for those taking it, most places are offered from the Autumn Term of Year 7 onwards (but can be as early as Year 6). Offers are subject to satisfactory school reports and a Head's reference.

Upon acceptance of a place, a confirmation fee is payable. This is refunded at the end of your child’s time at Ampleforth less any final bill expenses.

When confirming your child’s place, you will also be asked to make your house choice selection. Making your preference for a particular House can be a daunting task. Your visits will hopefully have given you a steer and a feel for the most appropriate house for your child. Our House pages on the website are also a useful guide and reminder. Families often come back for another visit before making their final choice of House, and we welcome all such visits.

Scholarships

13+ Scholarships are awarded during the Autumn and Spring Terms of Year 8. Candidates can apply for (up to two) scholarships in Academic, Art, Drama, Design Technology, Music, and Sport as part of our Basil Hume Scholarship Programme.
