Aims of the Department

The Department seeks to achieve high standards in the teaching and learning of mathematics, bringing the best out of all students, irrespective of their level of ability, and giving them the confidence to use the mathematical skills that they have acquired.

It is our purpose, in teaching Mathematics,

  • to provide courses which are properly differentiated, encouraging confidence, enjoyment and challenge to all students in the learning of mathematics;
  • to give students the opportunity and the confidence to use mathematics to solve problems, both within mathematics itself, in their other school studies and more generally;
  • to encourage a view of mathematics as a way of thinking and as a language for communicating ideas, and to develop effective ways of visualising and thinking more generally.
