  • Headshot of Anthony

    Anthony: Housekeeping Assistant

One of my favourite things about working here is the people. I’ve worked here 10 years and what really sticks with me is the caring atmosphere here, full of genuine people.

If you’re having a bad day, it’s soon noticed, and someone will always offer you a friendly ear or a cup of tea. I really feel like when I come to work I’m valued and listened to, which is great.

Housekeeping helps me stay active, which is important to me as I couldn’t work at a desk all day. I’ve also enjoyed getting to know the guests who frequently visit and have gotten to know me in return over the years.

There are also great benefits to the job, most important to me is the good pension scheme and full company sick pay.

Although it sounds like a cliché, the people here have become like a family who I can really be myself around, and I don’t plan on leaving anytime soon.

  • Headshot of Adrian

    Adrian: Healthcare Assistant

In my job I provide care and support to the whole monastic community, whether they live here on-site or out in the parishes.

I've built good relationships with them over the 3 and a half years I've been here and found supporting each person’s physical and mental well-being to be really fulfilling.

At the Monastery Infirmary we are a very close and caring team, and everyone is really supportive of each other. That's one of the main reasons I enjoy working here. I also really like that here we have the time to provide in-depth care that is very much person centred, that's very important to me.

Another thing I really appreciate is the shifts are flexible and Karen [Matron of the Infirmary] is very accommodating to our needs and shift preferences.

  • Lucy

    Lucy: Marketing Assistant

As a Marketing Assistant I support my manager in promoting Ampleforth Abbey and all that we have to offer.

My role is great because it's so varied and allows me to be really creative. A monastery is such a unique thing to market - I really do learn something new everyday.

One thing I love about working here is the beauty of the place, I'm always in awe as I drive into work in a morning and it's amazing seeing the valley change through the seasons.

I also appreciate the flexibility, I can work from home or start a bit earlier/later if I need to.

The staff are so kind and really welcomed me when I first started over a year ago. The monks are also great to work with and are really cooperative when it comes to being filmed, photographed or interviewed for marketing purposes.
