Rugby at St Martin's Ampleforth is taught in a safe and controlled way to ensure children's safety and enjoyment.
The Autumn term, in particular, is devoted to rugby for boys, though a range of other indoor and outdoor sports is always available.
The school has wonderful pitches throughout the valley.
The school boasts a fine tradition in both the XV-a-side and VII-a-side forms of the game. It plays regular fixtures against other schools and competes regularly in the prestigious National 7-a-side competition held at Rosslyn Park. Pupils have opportunity to play at County level and a number of children also play for Malton or York Rugby Clubs. Talented players are also given the opportunity to try out for the Prep School Lambs which involves regional, national and international games.
In 2014 the U13 Rugby Seven team came second in the National School 7s Championship at Rosslyn Park. The team narrowly missed winning the final against Millfield School.
