Sport at St Martin's Ampleforth is important as it fulfils many roles from being a fun way to enjoy a healthy lifestyle to learning to work as a team or individually. Whilst learning to compete is vital, it is also essential to learn good sportsmanship whatever the result.
Every pupil, from Nursery to Year 8, is expected to take part in the formal sports programme through a variety of Sports and PE. In winter boys play rugby, hockey and take part in cross country, whilst girls take hockey, netball, lacrosse and cross country.
As well as timetabled sport there are also opportunities to take part in sporting activities through our extra curricular activity programme.
Coaching at St Martin's Ampleforth is provided mainly by our own teaching staff, all of whom are accomplished players and coaches. Our provision is enhanced by specialist coaches for sports such as tennis, golf and fencing. We also host coaching sessions by visiting professional coaches.
At St Martin's Ampleforth the sporting facilities are excellent. As well our professionally maintained playing fields the school has a full sized floodlit astro turf, a smaller all weather playing area, a fully equipped sports hall and our own nine hole golf course. We use the 25 metre indoor swimming pool at the Ampleforth College and we have use of the additional sporting facilities at the College.
