French

In the French Department we believe that young language learners are amongst the best.   They have a natural ability and come to language learning with enthusiasm and an open mind.   To harness this ability we start French tuition early, with our Year 1 pupils.   For our younger learners lessons involve active learning of spoken French through rhymes, games, songs and drama.  More formal French teaching starts in Year 5, with the introduction of grammar and written French.   In year 7 and 8 pupils follow the Common Entrance course with most pupils sitting the Common Entrance exam at the end of year 8.  Throughout our French teaching pupils develop an awareness of French culture.  The French course prepares children well for transfer to Ampleforth College.
