Hockey

Hockey is a major sport at Ampleforth College for both girls and boys.

Ampleforth currently runs three senior and four junior Girls teams in the Autumn Term and three senior and four junior Boys teams in the Lent Term. Tuesdays and Saturdays are the main days for fixtures for junior teams, and Wednesdays and Saturdays for senior teams. Gifted and talented hockey players can also opt for hockey coaching during all three terms as the games programme is supplemented with hockey activity sessions as well as strength and conditioning.

Hockey is a very successful sport at Ampleforth. The fixture list is competitive and we enter National Competitions for both Girls and Boys at U14, U16 and U18 age groups every year. In recent years, both the Girls and Boys 1st XIs have had unbeaten seasons, as well as being County Champions and making regional finals. Individual students are encouraged to take part in hockey outside of school with many making county (Junior Academy Centres) and regional selection (Junior Regional Performance Centres).

The coaching team work tirelessly to make sure that all students enjoy their hockey and maximise their potential. Almost all students who select hockey as their games option represent the school in competitive fixtures. Our philosophy is to foster enjoyment and to nurture values such as teamwork, selflessness and sportsmanship in a supportive environment where all abilities can thrive.
