Sports

Sport forms an integral part of a child’s development whilst at Ampleforth College.

This is achieved through providing a sports programme that has a positive influence on all ages and all abilities and instils a life-long love for sport and physical activity.  Our aim is to develop every child’s interest, passion and performance in sport, from aspiring internationals to those who chose physical activity purely as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Ampleforth's long tradition of sporting excellence gives us the experience required to maximise every student’s potential, regardless of the level of sport they play. To help achieve this, we offer outstanding facilities, regular contact time with each student, and an exceptional team of coaches. Our coaches are comprised of former international sportsmen and women, professional coaches, staff solely dedicated to the running of our school sport, and committed academic staff. This level of support guarantees the best possible environment for every student to develop their skills, including the very elite.

We offer a wide variety of team and individual sports, providing pupils with many opportunities to represent the College at all levels in inter-school fixtures. Each term, pupils are encouraged to participate in a range of sports including: rugby, hockey, netball, cricket, tennis, football, golf, cross-country, squash, and swimming.

Whilst representing Ampleforth at competitive sport is considered an honour and a privilege for our pupils, we recognise that it is not necessarily the right pathway for all. To that effect, we offer a variety of sports and physical activities such as dance, fishing, country sports, squash, fitness, and strength and conditioning.

During the Autumn Term boys’ rugby, girls’ hockey, and cross-country are the main competitive sports. Those pupils not selected to represent the school in these sports can participate in sports such as:  country sports, fitness, dance, golf, fencing, swimming and badminton.

During the Lent Term boys’ hockey, boys’ rugby sevens, girls’ netball, football, cross-country, squash and swimming are the main sports. Those not selected to represent the school in these sports can participate in activities such as: country sports, spinning, dance, fencing and fitness.

During the Summer Term both girls' and boys' cricket, tennis, athletics and golf are the main sports. Those not selected to represent the school in these sports can participate in: country sports, boot-camp, dance, fencing, water polo, and fishing.

As well as a full fixture list at all age groups against other schools, we have an integral programme of inter-house sport, enabling all pupils to experience competitive sport on a regular basis.
