Fierce competition in sport this week with the Inter-House Netball and Hockey - congratulations to St Margaret's and St Cuthbert's & St Thomas' for the Intermediates and to St Bede's and St Dunstan's & St Oswald's for the Seniors.
We welcomed 25 students and their parents for our Sixth Form Taster Lessons last Saturday - a fantastic way for them to experience Ampleforth education first-hand and help decide the right subjects. I look forward to seeing many of them join us in September.
At this time of year, with Remove ruminating on their mock GCSE results and the Upper Sixth in the middle of mock exams, these year groups are increasingly focusing on how to do their very best in the public exams next term; crucial milestones in their educational journeys.
It was another successful weekend for our U18A Cross Country team with a win against Stonyhurst.
It was lovely to host so many prospective parents and prep school Heads for drinks at the very elegant Corinthia in London on Monday, all eager to learn more about life here in the Valley.
Firstly, I am sure you will join me in offering support and best wishes to the monastic community following the sad news about the death of Fr Jonathan Cotton (H60).
I hope you had a lovely Christmas and enjoyed time with your families over the holidays - Marie and I wish you a very happy New Year.
On our return from the uplifting and moving Ampleforth Carol service at Corpus Christi, Covent Garden, the spirit and pluck of Ampleforth was epitomised by the Schola who sang carols to keep up the spirits of passengers stuck on the train for hours by damage to overhead cables. A video clip has gone viral (over 80,000 views to date!)
On our return from the uplifting and moving Ampleforth Carol service at Corpus Christi, Covent Garden, a very special setting thanks to Father Alan and his parish team, the spirit and pluck of Ampleforth was epitomised by the Schola who sang carols from the service to keep up the spirits of passengers stuck for hours on our return train York, stranded from in the night by the failure of the overhead cables with the cold!
“School (or college) isn’t a sufficient word to encompass all that we saw at Ampleforth. This is a community and a way of life…” The Good Schools Guide
Ofsted, the Catholic Schools Inspectorate, and HMC (the Heads Conference) have visited us this term and all were very pleased with what they found. We are particularly delighted to be graded ‘Outstanding’ in Personal Development (Ofsted) and ‘Outstanding’ in all nine judgements on the quality of Catholic life and mission, religious education and collective worship (Catholic Schools Inspection). Summary extracts from Ofsted’s and the Catholic Schools’ inspection reports are in the booklet below. The full reports can be found here. Following the Head, Peter Robert’s, membership of HMC, Ampleforth College is now under the oversight of the Independent Schools Inspectorate.
