Mrs Mary Griffin

Head of Drama & Theatre Director

Mary joined Ampleforth as the Head of Drama & Theatre Director in September 2017. Before arriving here, she studied Drama and Theatre Arts at Middlesex University, specialising in comedy and theatre makeup. She worked as a professional theatre makeup artist for a number of years before undertaking a PGCE (with Masters) in Devon. She has worked in a number of capacities in her previous schools, including Academic Head of House, Assistant Head of Key Stage, Arts Award Leader, Curriculum Leader and Head of Department and is currently studying a part-time PhD, researching gender equality in education, whilst developing her specialist theatre interests in physical theatre and Artaud. Mary is excited about developing the provision for Drama at Ampleforth and supporting the department to grow in size, aspiration and opportunity for students.

  • Mrs Rosemary Clough
    BA (Hons), PGCE
    Teacher of Drama

    Rosemary read Drama and Performance Studies at Aberystwyth University and after two interim years of running workshops with a Youth Theatre decided to complete her PGCE. During her first year of teaching she had gained experience in both the grammar and state school sectors and quickly rose to take on a lead role as Head of Department. Subsequently Rosemary spent three years at an International School in the Czech Republic, resourcing a new Drama department and introducing IGCSE to the curriculum. She joined Ampleforth in 2016 and is already highly involved in the theatrical activities on offer at the college.

  • Miss Laura Walsh
    Teacher of Dance & Creative Director of AYT

    Laura trained at the Royal Academy of Dance in London achieving a first class honours degree in Ballet Education. She also achieved her Licentiate from the Royal Academy of Dance and is an associate teaching member of the International Dance Teachers Association. Laura completed her ballet examinations up to the advanced level and danced professionally before beginning her teaching career. At Ampleforth, Laura teaches a variety of dance styles and prepares students for examinations and performances. Laura also runs Ampleforth Youth Theatre, a Performing Arts school for the community on Saturday mornings.

  • Miss Marie Gair
    BA, Grad Dip, PGCE
    Teacher of Speech and Drama

    Marie has 17 years of experience of teaching Drama both in schools and within the community. She also works as artistic director at a nearby theatre. Currently, Marie offers tutoring both in acting and public speaking examinations accredited through the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA).

  • Mr Michael Ramsden
    Theatre Technician

    During his Physics degree at Oxford, Michael was an active part of the Oxford University Theatre Technician Society, serving as president for one year, and worked on over 40 student productions including 4 years at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and as a technician at the Theatre by the Lake in Keswick. Prior to coming to Ampleforth in 2011, Michael was Theatre Technician and then Theatre Manager at Rugby School. Michael is a keen baker and Scout leader.
