The Ampleforth College Big Band was founded in September 2002 by Mr Dore to explore the rich repertoire of 20th century jazz, from swing, through to be-bop, fusion, rock and soul. The group consists of around 22 students, aged between 13-18 and two staff from the College, but also welcomes students from local schools to take part. Over the years, the band has given a great many gigs for various charities around Yorkshire and beyond, including three at the Helmsley Arts Centre, The Galtres Centre (Easingwold) and other well-known venues, not to mention many memorable jazz evenings and concerts on its own turf. 

In 2005, it provided the music for a DVD made by the History Department at Malton School in conjunction with the Ryedale Folk Museum entitled 'Ryedale, Our Countryside at War’ The band has been on tour to play in the Cork Jazz Festival, recorded on two CDs, and has played at two famous jazz clubs in London; The 606 Club and Pizza Express in Soho.
