Physics is the branch of science concerned with the nature and properties of matter and energy. It includes mechanics, heat, light and other radiation, sound, electricity, magnetism, and the structure of atoms. Here at Ampleforth, through a love of experiments, a well-stocked prep-room, and dedicated and enthusiastic teachers, our aim is to pass on the torch of scientific enquiry and a tradition of “good science” to future generations.

We begin the IGCSE courses in Year 9 and this gives us considerable flexibility of approach allowing extension beyond the narrow confines of the current IGCSE specification where appropriate, for example stretching the gifted and talented with Olympiad Challenges, and workshops and visits for all. All IGCSE exams are sat in the summer of the Year 11.

Our Sixth Form physicists sit two examinations in the summer term of Year 13. A one-year AS qualification in physics is also available.
