Ampleforth Abbey is located on the southern edge of the North Yorkshire Moors, about 22 miles north of the City of York, and about 12 miles east of Thirsk, 12 miles west of Malton.

By road via the motorway network, the fastest route usually is to follow the A1(M) as far as the A168. The A168 is the fast link to the A19. Take the second turnoff indicated for Thirsk (continuing further will force you onto the A19 North - requiring you to double back).

The roundabout at the end of this sliproad allows you to join the A170 (including the very steep Sutton Bank) turning onto our local roads at Sproxton. Avoid this in wintry condition.

Alternatively you take the A19 south (towards York). If you choose this preferred route, take second left turn (for Coxwold, Wass and Ampleforth). This is a direct route, except for a left turn at the crossroads in Coxwold, and takes you past the lovely ruins of Byland Abbey.
