Peter Hope was the only son of Henry John Hope, 3rd Baron Rankeillour (1899-1967) and Mary Ricardo (1917-about 2000). He was in St Oswald's House at Ampleforth, first with Fr Stephen Marwood and then with Fr Bernard Boyan..
After leaving Ampleforth, Peter became a farmer in the West of Scotland. On the death of his father in 1967, he succeeded to the title as 4th Baron Rankeillour and took his seat in the House of Lords. He was a member of the House of Lords from 1967 to 1999. Although he rarely spoke, he attended rarely, and took part in the Committee work of the House. He spoke with much eloquence and knowledge in 1995 against the proposal to close the West Highland railway link; he had certainly used this railway more than any other Members of the House.
He was the sister of Anne, brother-in-law of Stephen Dobson (O50 - died 2004) and uncle of Dominic Dobson (W77). He died on 12 April 2005 in Scotland.
In 1999 he lost his right to sit in the House of Lords when 90 percent of
heredity peers lost their seats in 1999. In the years that followed he lived in Scotland and did not travel South. His health increasingly
deteriorated and he died on 12 April 2005.
