HENRY BYRNE (O04), BEN DOLLARD (D04) and ALICE ROBINSON (A04) were in Thabon in northern Thailand from January to March 2005 helping in a school in a small village. This is a project sponsored by St John's Catholic College in Bangkok, and to which Ampleforth has been invited to share since 2000. The Sisters in Thabon wrote [5 March 2005] "Our three British volunteers - Alice, Ben and Henry are preparing to move on. They have given themselves to teaching English to our students for 6 weeks as part of their gap year experience before entering university. They are the latest Ampleforth students to come, keeping on the tradition started in 1998. Instead of staying with families in Thabon itself which the volunteers before them did, they lived with the families of students in other villages, sharing food and bedspace, getting up early in the morning, coming to and from school in old 6-wheelers-turned-school-buses. It is an experience they value very much. On the students’ part, it is an experience of welcoming a (older) brother / sister of another race and culture into their homes and into their lives. A mutually enriching experience".
NICHOLAS AINSCOUGH (E/EW04) and MARY-ROSE SIDGWICK (A04) have been teaching in Antigua for three months in early 2005. "For the last three months, we’ve lived in Antigua and travelled daily to the indigenous village of Santa María de Jesús 30 minutes away. We stayed with a fantastic Guatemalan family in central Antigua who have looked after us more than we could ever have wished for. We work up at Santa María 5 days a week, Monday to Friday. Each volunteer has 2 classes a day. The focal point of the project is the children, and they are incredible in their willingness to learn and their genuine affection. For example, we watched a boy progress from not really having the communication skills to interact with the other children to now being able to join in during class and really enjoy himself at school.
It has been an honor and a privilege to work so closely with these children and adults. We will never forget our 3 months with GVI, making a difference". Nicholas was at Ampleforth on 17 September 2005 watching the 1st XV.
